NAKED LABS - OOBE
In 2018, I worked with Naked Labs to develop and ship the world’s first in-home 3D body scanner. I designed a variety of assets as their sole visual designer. One of the largest and most impactful projects was their Out-of-Box Experience (OOBE).
Since Naked Labs’ body scanner needed to be set up in-home by its users, I designed an animated guide to not only show people how to properly assemble their scanner, but also immediately onboard them to the app and first scan experience.
I worked with a UX/Product Designer, UX Researcher, and our engineering team to test and implement the animations and interactions into our mobile experience.
RESEARCH
Before creating any visual assets, I wanted to settle how we could create a scale-able experience, in both animation quality and mobile screen size.
Feedback from our engineering team led me to use After Effects and Lottie to create lightweight, flexibly-scaled animations.
After conferring with our UX/Product designer, I created a screen template with a “safe zone” for visuals: no matter what phone the user had, they would still be able to view the animation.
STORYBOARDING
I storyboarded the unboxing process and pitched generalized animation flows to the Product team. Once the team felt a segment was developed enough, I would develop rough GIFs from the boards and send mockups to our beta testers for feedback.
PRODUCTION & IMPLEMENTATION
Once all animations and illustrations were finalized, I worked with our UX/Product Designer and engineering team to finalize layouts, implement the animations into the app, and test the overall experience.
RESULTS
Thanks to our extensive beta testing, Naked Labs’ OOBE was well-received. A majority of our reviews, ranging from sites like Mashable and CNET to individual users, noted the ease of onboarding and unboxing.
